Traditional short form video has used landscape, horizontal shooting, to tell stories. But TikTok and Instagram changed that and news organizations are trying to catch.

You’ve probably been shooting vertically on your devices. But now news organizations are looking to tell stories or report the news using vertical video. The latest initiative comes from CNN. The New York Times reported that CNN Chairman and CEO Mark Thompson wants a heavy push into vertical video.

The NYT reports that CNN would like publish 50 to 100 every day. They are thinking about creating an app like TikTok or Instagram specifically for CNN. This is what Thompson sees in the near future. “You can use your thumb to flick from a CNN news story to a CNN anchor to a reporter,” Thompson said.

The New York Times is also using vertical videos for regular news stories.

Now the question is how to translate good storytelling to vertical video.

Aiden Robbins has a some very good suggestion in this video produced by Adorama.
